Why Early Treatment Is Important

Early recognition and treatment of acute or overuse injuries will ensure proper healing. When an injury does occur, inflammation can be controlled with ice, compression, and elevation. Resting the injury is important, however total immobilization should be avoided. The use of range of motion exercises, and low level strengthening with early treatment will help prevent muscle atrophy, decrease scar tissue formation, and keep swelling and edema under control. Joint movement will also decrease muscle spasm which in turn will increase circulation to the area and decrease joint and muscle pain.
