Treating Patellofemoral Pain
With any overuse injury to the lower extremity, abnormal foot biomechanics are the main cause. Correcting them should be the first step in treating patellofemoral pain. The use of custom foot orthotics are recommended to help correct this abnormality.
Patella tracking must also be addressed with regards to patellofemoral pain. The vastus medialus oblique has an important role in correct tracking of the patella. Patellar taping and patellar knee braces help to control symptoms, however, strengthening of the vastus medialus is the most important aspect in controlling patellofemoral pain. Stretching of the hamstrings and IT band are also recommended.
